Saturday Sweets: Federal Donuts Finally Opens in Wynwood
The year long wait after the first initial announcement is finally over - Federal Donuts is officially open in Wynwood. The concept has been brought to us from Philadelphia by Michael Solomonov and partner Steven Cook. They’ve got a CooknSolo team of veterans running the shop - Chef Dean Hildebrand and General Manager Autumn Tully moved to Miami a few months ago and are now calling Wynwood home with the first ever Federal Donuts location outside of Philadelphia.
The menu keeps things simple with two categories of donuts: Fancy and Hot Fresh.
The Fancy donuts come in 6 variations: Guava Poppy, Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Eclair, Blueberry Mascarpone, Lemon Meringue and Black & White. Always a fan of chocolate, the Chocolate Eclair was probably my favorite. It’s reminiscent of the Chocolate Eclair ice cream you would get from the neighborhood ice cream man as a kid. Same goes for the Strawberry Shortcake - they’ve got the texture figured all out. Each flavor is stand out in its own way. While the Guava Poppy wasn’t at popular in Philadelphia, the Miami team fought for it to be on the opening menu - because, Miami.
When it comes to the Hot Fresh donuts, they’ve got a donut robot doing all the work and making the 3 flavors fresh to order. Strawberry Lavender, Cookies n’ Cream, Cinnamon Brown Sugar. I’m partial to the Strawberry Lavender - it’s such a fun flavor! The Cinnamon Brown Sugar reminded me of a churro, especially as they are served so warm.
I really love that they are keeping it simple and sweet. Sometimes, that’s really all you need when it comes to a good donut!
Adding a little savory to the sweet on the menu is the fried chicken. The menu includes half or a whole chicken served either dry, wet or naked. You can pick from glazes that include chili garlic, sweet soy garlic and honey ginger, or the dry seasoning options za’atar, buttermilk ranch and coconut curry. There’s also a fried chicken sandwich, topped with buttermilk ranch seasoning, spicy sauce served on a Martin’s Potato Roll with a doughnut on the side. The chicken is served every day starting at 11am.
