"The Big Reveal" at the Diplomat Beach Resort by Hilton in Hollywood was just that this past week during a two-day celebration of the newly refurbished hotel and resort. The events included antique roadsters, poolside appetizers, live music and general merriment. We were invited to join the party at The Diplomat Prime Restaurant which is one of 10 restaurants at this over 1,000 room sparklingly renovated hotel and spa.
The original Diplomat Hotel was first opened in 1958 by Sam Friedland, founder of the Food Fair Supermarket chain and has enjoyed quite a history since that time. With the recent $100 million renovation, this new and improved property has some delicious dining options to chose from including Geoffrey Zakarian’s Point Royal (http://www.miabites.com/home/geoffrey-zakarian-opens-point-royal-diplomat-florida) Bristol’s Burgers, Portico Beer & Wine Garden and Diplomat Prime, an upscale, 1950’s inspired steakhouse.
As soon as we entered the lobby of the Diplomat, we were escorted to our table in Diplomat Prime: a hip, intimate dining spot, where we enjoyed a sampler of colossal shrimp cocktail, oysters on the half shell, jumbo lump crabmeat and poached Maine lobster. As we sipped champagne, a white Sancerre from France, and a cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley, we were presented with our first course of steak tartare, roasted beets and a watercress salad.
Lively conversation flowed as did the progression of wonderful food including a perfectly cooked Wagyu filet mignon,
Maine scallops and Heritage chicken with baby heirloom potatoes.
All good things have to come to a delicious end with dessert and we were given the grand finale with a chocolate marquise and a creme brûlée.
The original Diplomat entertained many celebrities of yesteryear such as Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., Liza Minelli, Former President Ronald Reagan and Bob Hope and the atmosphere of hospitality continues in this newly renovated resort rekindling the spirit of South Florida.
