New Latin Inspired Brunch at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar

Sure, Miami loves its cafecitos and Cuban toast, but with its late night party scene, wide range of culinary genres available, and warm climate, Miami is a city that is tailor-made for brunch.

Given the growing popularity of this weekend meal among Miamians, the folks from Wynwood Kitchen & Bar decided to finally launch their own version, and being a huge fan of both their food and brunch, I could not resist the opportunity to give them a try.  Wynwood Kitchen & Bar is practically the "grandfather" in the fast growing Wynwood dining scene, opening in 2011, it anchors the popular Wynwood Walls.

Nuevo Latino is the name of the game for WKB’s brunch, and if the Venezuelan Cachapas — sweet corn cakes smothered with queso de mano, queso fresco and crema — are any indication, said game is on point.  Having lived in Weston (aka Weston-zuela) for close to a decade, I have developed quite an affinity for these sweet and hearty cakes, and I can assure you that the ones from WKB are some of the best I’ve ever had.

Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar’s brunch also incorporates elements from his wildly successful dinner menu, like the skirt steak that is served fried as “vaca frita” in the evening, and cooked on the grill for brunch. The tender meat is served on top of crunchy fried yucca sticks and a fried egg, giving it a nice Latin spin on the classic American “Steak & Eggs”.
The unclassic Wynwood Benedict is a must-get: a base of warm, savory polenta, topped with crab meat, a poached egg and chipotle hollandaise sauce. Probably one of the most original takes on Eggs Benedict I’ve had in a while. And that polenta… don’t even get me start on that. So. Damn. Delicious!

Last but not least, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of my favorite (and most beautifully presented) dishes on the menu: the Tostada. This sunny side-up egg with tomato puree, black beans, cotija cheese and crema is served on top of a crunchy corn tortilla. It’s colorful, flavorful, and just the right size if you are looking for a lighter dish that doesn’t sacrifice on flavor.

WKB’s new Latin inspired brunch is a creative and welcome addition to the Miami culinary scene. It’s back patio is one of the coolest ones in the city (Shepard Fairey murals, anyone?), and it's covered, which means year-round brunching.

The only question I have here is: What took them so long?!

Welcome, WKB... to Miami’s brunch scene!
