Cotoletta: Veal Milanese comes to South of Fifth
It was Valentines Day, and we had made a reservation for Cotoletta, the two-month-old spinoff of the popular Coconut Grove restaurant in the South of Fifth neighborhood of Miami Beach.
Uber was surge pricing at $67 one way, so we decided to drive, which from Mid Beach took almost an hour. Boat Show, Presidents Day weekend and Valentines all rolled into one giant traffic jam. Thank goodness, Cotoletta has a $25 valet, so we were ahead of the game.
Entering Cotoletta felt welcoming and cozy, with heart shaped balloons adding to the festive Valentines ambiance. Every table was filled, yet the sound level was such that we were able to have a conversation and of course, people watch.
Cotoletta offers a new concept in dining. A prix fix menu of one main course, two starters and two sides at $125 prix fix, making it one of the best value meals in Miami Beach.
The menu is posted and the servers are well versed on the cocktail and wine list, so ordering is easy.
When making a choice is not your vibe, Cotoletta takes the stress off, “who ordered the best dish”.
The starters included a fresh tomato, basil and burrata bruschetta and truffle arancini.
The main course(or Main Event!) is a thinly pounded veal chop Milanese with just a hint of rosemary and a half of lemon to squeeze over the lightly breaded veal. Big enough to share.
The sides offer the only choice of the meal with a choice of penne pomodoro pasta or a spicy arrabiatta, salad with balsamic dressing, french fries or fried zucchini.
For dessert, the tiramisu and fresh pistachio gelato were our ending choice.
We paired the meal with a full-bodied Brunello Di Montalcino which was perfect.
Cotoletta isn’t fancy but offers a unique dining experience in a casual setting.
