September is Hunger Action Month, and for the past two years MIAbites has collaborated with National nonprofit, Food Rescue US to help reduce food waste and help feed the food insecure. 40% of food is wasted in the US, while 1 in 7 Americans go to bed hungry every night. Using an app, Food Rescue Miami recovered over 650,000 lbs. of food including at this year’s Super Bowl LIV.

With COVID, they pivoted their model to fund local restaurants to provide over 50,000 chef prepared meals to the many unemployed, laid off and furloughed individuals and food insecure families through their Restaurant Meal Community Kitchens.

The COVID pandemic has added many more to those who are now food insecure as national statistics are projected to soar to increase as much as 50% in 2020.

Simple Vodka, which launched in March of 2017, has as an integral element to their business model the goal to help fight hunger. The spirits brand is on a mission to help fight hunger in America by donating 20 meals for every bottle produced to local food banks and food insecurity relief organizations and to national organizations like Feeding America. To date they have contributed more than 1 million meals and aim to eclipse 5 million meals by the end of 2021.

So, through a friend of a friend, these like-minded businesses were connected with the common goal to help feed the less fortunate.
