Antica Mare: A Tuscan Escape on Biscayne Bay

We are all familiar with the dining hot spots on South Beach and in Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and Wynwood – but as the Miami dining scene continues its growth outward even from those areas, a new dining quarter is making its presence known...MiMo and even more recently, Little River.

Just north of MiMo, bordering on the likes of PINCH Miami, Cake Thai, and the new Anderson Bar, Little River has definitely become one of the more happening areas in Miami.  Tucked away in the Shore Crest Apartments overlooking Biscayne Bay and at the foot of the 79th Causeway Bridge you will find Antica Mare, the Tuscan escape you did not know existed.  I recently joined other Miami food writers for an evening “away from the maddening crowd”.

BRUNCH: Rise & Dine with SOBEWFF founder and author, Lee Brian Schrager

It is no secret that Miamians love their brunch…it may be the most popular weekend activity and for many the favorite meal of the week.  Creative Miami chefs have made the weekend tradition so enticing that just making the decision of where to go on any given Saturday or Sunday is a challenge.

Well, this Sunday, that decision has been made for you!

Widely recognized for his creation of the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach and New York City Wine & Food Festivals, festival founder Lee Brian Schrager brings his hometown of Miami yet another foodie fête on Sunday, April 24 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at Magic City Casino to celebrate the launch of his third cookbook, AMERICA’S BEST BREAKFASTS: Favorite Local Recipes from Coast to Coast (Clarkson Potter; On Sale: April 5, 2016).

Like Schrager’s SOBEWFF, which celebrated its 15th edition this past February, all proceeds from the event will benefit the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University.

The AMERICA’S BEST BREAKFASTS FESTIVAL®, will feature more than 40 of Schrager’s favorite South Florida spots serving up sweet and savory ideations of the most “important” meal of the day.  Curated with the support of local food authority Burger Beast, guests will enjoy some of the best eggs, pancakes, waffles, donuts, including a matzo brei from Chef Allen Susser for guests observing Passover, and more. Even McDonald’s will join the celebration, bringing the joy of All Day Breakfast to event-goers with an array of special surprises.

Sunday Shanghai Nights at Bazi South Beach

Growing up on Long Island meant going out for Chinese Food on Sunday nights

It was basically the only night of the week we went out to dinner in those days, so Sunday was somewhat of a tradition my brothers and I looked forward to.  “The Golden Dragon” was on Main Street (doesn't every town have a Main Street?) with red banquettes, lacquer red walls, low lighting, big round tables and lots of pictures of fierce Chinese warriors creating an ambiance of a mysterious place we all imagined China to be.  Dishes were served family style and meant to be shared. Now that I think of it, Chinese food was probably the first cuisine to introduce the idea of sharing.

Bazi in South Beach is a far cry from that distant memory, but on Sunday nights, Chef Michael Pirolo, and his sister Jackie, who both lived on Long Island, turn back the clocks to offer Shanghai Nights, an ode to that traditional Sunday dinner at The Golden Dragon, or wherever you went.

Saturday Sweets: Nutella Rice Krispies RECIPE

RECIPE: Nutella Rice Krispies

I am pretty sure it’s been established that I am a busy baker with an even bigger sweet tooth.  But if you know me, then you know Nutella is the greatest thing ever invented in my eyes.  I may or may not (I definitely do) have two jars of Nutella in my house at all times – one to bake with, as I have almost a cult following when it comes to my Nutella Swirl cake and one for me to eat out of over and over with a spoon whenever I’m craving that chocolaty goodness!

I can find an excuse to add Nutella to almost anything and that’s exactly what I did here.  I love Rice Krispies!  The snap, crackle, and pop crunch of the cereal engulfed in gooey marshmallow happiness of the iconic Rice Krispie Treat is enough to make me weak in the knees, but when you go and add TWO cups of Nutella into the mix – forget it, all bets are off!  Keep these babies far far away from me or else they will be gone in a day.  I hope you enjoy these just as much as I do!

The Traymore Gin Bar: With Over 40 Gins to Love

For as long as I have been able, I have loved gin and tonics, so it has delighted me that in the last decade the international appreciation for gin has grown immensely.

This encompasses heralding the traditional juniper-forward styles and welcoming the new myriad of citrus and unconventional botanical expressions.  In order make sense of what style of gin and gin and tonic you like, it helps to be able to try them side by side and such a place exists here in Miami Beach.

The Traymore Restaurant and Bar in the Metropolitan by COMO in the Mid-Beach area of Miami Beach boasts not only a gin-centric bar with 40 different gins, but a gin and tonic flight program.

Cooking for your doshas: An afternoon of Ayurvedic cooking

By popular demand, a new Ayurveda Cooking Class has just be added for Sunday April 23rd 10am to 2 pm at ALNO Kitchens. To register as there is limited space contact: 305-389-2408 954- 554-6731  www.sampoornacollege.com

On a recent Sunday afternoon, I was invited to an interactive, informative Ayurvedic cooking class.  I had had Ayurvedic spa treatments years ago. I remembered something about it, but was looking forward to combining a refresher course of my spa experience with an Ayurvedic cooking class.  The backdrop of this lively, educational class was Alno Kitchen and Cabinets and was lead by Sabrina Dora Lopez, founder of Vesta Foods and Ann Harrison, a certified Ayurveda therapist.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system of natural healing.  Ayurveda recognizes that human beings are a part of nature and describes three fundamental energies, I.e. Doshas.  The three Doshas are Vata (wind), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth). It is important to determine your dosha or your dominant dosha.

Sabrina and Ann passed out a questionnaire so that we could determine our individual dosha.  These questions pertained to our appearance, appetite, physical activity, emotions, etc. It was sort of like taking a Myers-Briggs questionnaire, if you have ever done that. Why bother with finding out your dosha?  I learned that when our dosha or energy is out of balance we obviously don't operate at our optimum capacity, either physically or emotionally.

What we prepared...

Saturday Sweets: The Year of The Donut

WARNING: This week's Saturday Sweets by Amber Love Bond may just make you skip the yogurt and soft boiled egg and head to the nearest bakeshop.

There’s no doubt about it - donuts are to 2016 what mini cupcakes were to 2011.  What was once a simple glazed treat has now turned into crazy topped, fun creations and flavor combinations that might as well be considered personal sized cakes you can get away with eating for breakfast, no judgement allowed.

Truthfully, I am totally on board! Baker’s Confession: Donuts are the only sweet treat I’ve never attempted in my own kitchen because I love them so much and never want to take the magic away.

If you follow any of my social media food adventures then you know all about my #donutgroupie fangirl love for The Salty Donut and my willingness to stand in line for their mouthwatering creations.

Sarsaparilla: Chefs McInnis and Booth bring "cart to table" cuisine to Miami

THIS JUST IN:  Chefs Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth have partnered with Grove Bay Hospitality, the company behind Coconut Grove’s wildly-successful new restaurant, Glass & Vine for a new concept in early 2017 called Stiltsville Fish Bar; a two-story fish house and bar in Sunset Harbour in the former Joe Allen and Pubbelly Steak space (1787 Purdy Avenue).  Inspired by McInnis’ childhood fishing off Florida’s panhandle and the pair’s love of simply prepared seafood (the kind served in quaint fish shacks dotting Florida’s coastline), Stiltsville Fish Bar will embrace classic seafood cookery and modern techniques, served with delicious Key West style drinks.  Watch for more information on MIAbites.

The Sarsaparilla Club (and commonly pronounced SASparilla), the “cart to table” restaurant concept from Chefs Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth (of Yardbird and Gigi, and more recently Root & Bone in New York), recently opened in Miami Beach at the Shelborne Wyndham Hotel in the former Morimoto space.

With various culinary styles in their repertoire, such as Southern American and Asian, Chefs McInnis and Booth return to Miami to present some really interesting flavor combinations using farm fresh ingredients and the added element of table side, Dim Sum-like cart service.

The main menu is split into two sections which are Medium Plates, Sides, Salads and Large Plates and then a separate clipboard of three unique, table side, cart selections.   When applicable, the farm from which ingredients are sourced are cited under each menu item.

From the main menu we tried the Roots & Soil which is a fun salad, served in a terracotta plant saucer with a base of crumbled pumpernickel bread (as the soil) baby tomatoes and carrots with a yummy yuzu cream.

Then, the much talked about Shrimp and Bacon stuffed hot wings, which were spicy and very good.

Many moons ago, a little girl in Tuscany looked forward to the olive harvest, when pressed oils were savored over fresh bread rubbed raw with garlic. “That was the original bruschetta,” says Paola Ugolini, who’s now all grown-up but whose smile captures that little girl’s sense of wonder.

Ugolini says she “trained with passion” – a passion that comes from family.
