RECAP: Slow Food Miami “Snail of Approval” Tasting Party

I find myself making the same statement over and over again when discussing the Miami food scene:

“This city has fundamentally changed in the last 5 years.”

You think that’s an overstatement? Look over the Miami New Times “Best of” list from 2011 here: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/best-of/2011.  With very few exceptions, the winners are either no longer or might not make a “best of” list in today’s competition.

By 2011, the foundational pieces of our current food scene had either started to gain critical momentum or were simply not even on the Miami radar.

Five years ago, Slow Food Miami had their first “Snail of Approval” Tasting Party. In April of 2016, they had their latest. Standing on the terrace of the very chic 1 Hotel South Beach, I felt both privileged to attend and staggered by the fact there were hundreds of us, in this gorgeous setting, celebrating farms and produce.

Miami? The same Miami that gets panned for habitually choosing style over substance? Yup, we’ve come a long way baby.

Cocktails and more at Trust & Co.

Like all popular neighborhoods in Miami, Miracle Mile in Coral Gables has a type of crowd, one I haven’t been much of a part of since the 2000s (with the exception of my sporadic visits for brunch at The Local or to be reminded how much of a traitor I am by my lack of visits to hidden-gem favorite, Uvaggio).  I fail as a “defender” of the mainland, for my stomping grounds tend to be Wynwood, Midtown, more recently MiMo and the Mid Beach area; admittedly the “trendier” parts of town.

But my moth-like affliction to any institution that proclaims a “craft cocktail” menu is unwavering, so last week I finally decided to yield into the calling and venture toward Trust & Co., the new addition of the Miracle Mile extended corridor, where Jerry Flynn--ex co creator of Brickell’s Batch Gastropub--has commandeered the 6,000-square-foot space across the street from established Fritz & Franz Bierhaus.

Considering Miami’s revolving door of gastropubs and hyped-up concepts, you really have to trust your gut to open something this large. The expansive restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. In the front area, you will find find your casual happy-hour vibes executed with exposed concrete and subway-tiled walls, and a high-top surrounded rectangular island bar that is lined with large flat-screen TV’s. Toward the back you’ll find a more intimate restaurant setting of brick walls, dark wooden furnishings and red leather booths, softly lit by the lumber of a fully open kitchen. The decor leaves much to be desired, as the areas seemed disconnected, which could be the downfall of such a large space in an area where establishments are sought out for their chic environment rather than whatever inventive dishes it may offer.

We were tended to in the midst of the shift change, so I won’t be critical about the confusion from the servers. It’s to be noted, however, that they don’t serve the dinner menu til 5 p.m., so we opted for a couple of appetizers with our drink orders. My apprehension made itself apparent as my partner and I perused the incredibly extensive cocktail list which offered more vodka cocktails than I’ve ever seen on any curated craft menu. The 30 librations are divided into categories that include House Cocktails--from where my partner ordered the Canned Heat with Herradura Blanco Tequila, Ancho Reyes Liqueur, house made celery shrub, sriracha bitters and lime juice-- Martini & Coupe, Crushed Cocktails, Triple Crown Collection and Coffee Cocktails. As a gin drinker I struggled through my decision because some of my favorite classics like the Aviation and the Negroni had replaced my herbaceous spirit of choice with, you guessed it, vodka.

Downtown Miami Gets a Bit of Zest

The following is an excerpt from one of our favorite bloggers, Mitch & Mel Take Miami, on their visit to Cindy Hutson’s new restaurant, Zest, located downtown in Miami’s Southeast Financial Center.  The full article can be read on their blog through the link here.

I once worked for a Caribbean company and fell in love with everything about the islands. The people, the hospitality, the beaches, and the food – everything is second to none near the Caribbean Sea. Many years ago, when working for said company, I went to a business meeting at Ortanique on the Mile and had the best pumpkin soup I’ve ever had in my life. After that encounter, in a restaurant that’s really stood the test of time (now in it’s 15th year,) I became a fan not only of Ortanique but also of Chef Cindy Hutson. Ortanique and its Caribbean-inspired cuisine has always held a special place in my heart. So when I heard Chef Hutson was venturing to open a second restaurant in Downtown Miami, my heart pitter pattered a little.

The new restaurant, Zest, offers an eclectic fusion of different nations coupled with a modern take on island fare. Inside Miami’s iconic Southeast Financial Center, Zest’s vibrant décor is reminiscent of its Coral Gables sister. You’ll find bright colors and funky island décor in a 3,500 square foot restaurant and a menu that will blow you away.

COYO Taco opens in Brickell!

While there are always plenty of options in Miami to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, including at The Continental, The Dutch and even a Taquiza Takeover at The Rum Line, we found this COYO Taco Block Party worthy of considering taking a vacation day on Friday.

Miami’s favorite Mexican hotspot, COYO Taco, presents the 2nd annual Cinco de Mayo block party: Tacos, Luchas & Chelas on Thursday May 5th 4 pm to 3 am.

COYO opened in January 2015, when partners Alan Drummond, who heralds from the art district Coyoacan in Mexico City and music aficionado, Sven Vogtland, joined forces with seasoned chef/partner Scott Linquist, to create a restaurant concept that rocks Wynwood every day with lines out the door.

COYO’s flagship restaurant-venue is located in the heart of Miami's Wynwood Arts District, and is open for lunch, dinner, and late night service. The chic, yet simple space features indoor/outdoor dining with communal seating, and a speakeasy lounge complete with a collection of Mezcals and a weekly rotation of cutting-edge music programming, all complemented by a state of the art sound system. Next door to Panther Coffee, it has become one of the key anchors in the Wynwood Art District.

Saturday Sweets: Donut Divas and Fun Foods

Once again, Amber Love Bond hits our sweet tooth with Saturday Sweets!  This week, MIAbites “sweetest” contributor takes us to Donut Divas and Fun Foods for a major sugar coma.

Donut Divas and Fun Foods are bringing carnival/fair themed food to Miami all year long!  Yojani and Maria are the divas behind the fried sweet (and some savory) treats being offered at their shop for everyone to enjoy.  With a menu that includes Fried Oreos, Red Velvet Fried Oreos (my favorite), Mini Donuts, Funnel Cakes, Churros, Chocolate Fountains, and Candy Apples you’re sure to fall into a deep sugar coma in no time.  Donut Divas are available to cater events and even to host parties in their own shop.  Complete with skee ball, a photo area with fun props and a stage for performers, their circus themed décor makes you feel like you’re really spending your time under the big top, boasting the popular slogan “Come One Come All.”

Poke comes to Town: My Ceviche, Poke 305, Prime Fish and more to come

One of the hottest food trends in Los Angeles is poke (PO-KAY), a bowl built around marinated raw chunks of fish.  Originally popular as a beach shack dish in Hawaii, poke shops and food trucks are all over Southern California…from Malibu to Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Downtown LA and all the way down the coast to San Diego.

Basically raw tuna, salmon or other fresh fish chunks are marinated in soy, sesame oil and other ingredients and then layered over rice, quinoa, or greens and served with add ins like avocado, mango, seaweed, onion and other veggies.  Healthy, light and refreshing, it is a popular alternative to sushi and sashimi, and a perfect dish for lunch, dinner or a snack as Miami heads into the summer months.

Miami is just discovering this delicious lunch or dinner option with a number of favorite places offering poke on their menu.  La Mar by Gaston Acurio has been offering a poke appetizer for a while now.  Prime Fish also has poke on their menu as well.  Pubbelly Sushi has what they call Hawaiian Poki but is basically the same marinated tuna dish.

My Ceviche, who has always been a popular spot for fresh fish ceviche and “build your own bowls” just added a Tuna Poke Bowl to their menu as well.  Served over your choice of greens, rice or quinoa and kale, with optional add ins that include avocado, mango, onions and tomatoes.

A Taste of Liguria: Riviera Focacceria

Midtown is a funny place.  Anchored by Target and WalMart, it seems to be unclear as to whether or not it wants to be a mall or a walk able neighborhood for the many condo and rental residents who live there.

As far as food goes, it is equally confusing with top hip restaurants,  Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill , Salumeria 104 , Bocce and BlackBrick on one side, and Five Guys, Hurricane Wings and 100 Mondaditos and many loud Sports bars cropping up almost daily one block over.

Parking is great, $2- for 2 hours in the garages and Midtown is pretty accessible to I-95/195 and both downtown and the beach.

So it was with some trepidation that I strolled into Riviera Foccaceria one evening at the glowing recommendation of GourmandJ, Wokstar and Sara Liss among others.  Sandwiched between a busy sports bar and Giraffas, it seemed an unlikely spot for good food.

It was early, but Riviera was already well staffed and the open kitchen was buzzing for the handful of diners seeking fresh and authentic Ligurian cuisine.

Ligurian cuisine?

I love Italian food... Northern Italy with its cream based meat dishes, Southern Italy with its red sauce heavy items, but Liguria?  Never knew it had it’s own cuisine, much less even where Liguria was.

Liguria is a narrow, mountainous coastal strip of northwestern Italy that includes the famed Italian Riviera resort towns of San Remo and Portofino as well as the iconic Cinque Terre, a collection of five small villages situated in one of the most beautiful stretches of the Mediterranean coastline. Liguria's main city is Genoa, the hometown of Christopher Columbus and a melting pot of Southern French and Northern Italian culture, history, and architecture…and cuisine.
