Cool Vibes and Vietnamese Bites: Discovering Tran An in Little River
Tucked away in Miami’s Little River neighborhood, Tran An is the kind of restaurant that makes you appreciate the experience just as much as the food. With its cozy atmosphere, a little personality in every corner, and a ventanita that connects the restaurant to the surrounding neighborhood. It has a personality all its own.
Add generous portions and an authentic Vietnamese menu that makes you want to order a little bit of everything, and you have the makings of a place worth returning to.
The first thing that catches your attention is the ambiance. Tran An has a distinctive, almost retro-futuristic aesthetic, with bold colors, warm lighting, and playful design elements that give the space a cool vibe. Cool “booth” seating is unique and sets the tone. The music adds to the vibe, giving the restaurant a fun, laid-back energy without taking away from the intimacy of the space. It feels like the kind of place where you can show up with friends, share a meal, and endup staying longer than you planned.
And then there’s the ventanita, which I absolutely love. It gives Tran An a connection to the neighborhood, bringing a casual, distinctly Miami touch to the experience. There’s something charming about a restaurant that doesn’t feel closed off from the street but instead becomes part of the life happening around it. It adds another layer of personality to a place that already has plenty.
We decided to sample dishes from several sections of the menu, including the small plates, pho, and bowls. Sharing was the way to go, especially with the generous portion sizes. There was plenty to go around, making it easy to try different flavors without feeling as though we had to commit to just one dish.
My personal favorite was the green papaya salad. Finding a truly great green papaya salad in Miami can be difficult, so when I come across one that gets it right, I take notice. Tran An absolutely nailed it. It was fresh, crisp, vibrant, and beautifully balanced.
In fact, it was the best green papaya salad I’ve ever tasted outside of Asia. That’s a big statement, but this one earned it. I could happily return just to order it again.
Next up were the spicy chicken lettuce wraps, which brought a completely different set of flavors to the table. The chicken had a delicious kick, and wrapping it in crisp lettuce made every bite feel fresh and satisfying. I loved the grandma’s mayo which brought a creamy, flavorful element to the spicy chicken. Fun to eat and easy to share.
The broken rice with shaken beef brought a more substantial, savory element to the meal. The combination of tender, flavorful beef and broken rice made for a satisfying bowl, delivering the sort of comforting, hearty flavors that make Vietnamese rice dishes so appealing. It was great to have something substantial to balance out the brighter, fresher flavors of the papaya salad and lettuce wraps.
We also tried the garlic chicken soup noodles, which brought a comforting, warming element to the meal. The combination of chicken, noodles, fragrant garlic, and broth made it a lovely addition to our lineup.
What I particularly loved was the variety. There was freshness, spice, savory richness, and comfort, and everything felt even more enjoyable because we were sharing it.
Instead of committing to just one dish each, we got to sample a little bit of everything, compare favorites, and enjoy the meal together. For me, that’s one of the best ways to experience a restaurant, especially when the menu has so much to explore.
And even after all that, there’s still more to explore. Tran An has banh mi, imperial rolls, vermicelli noodles, and boba teas on the menu. All of which are now on my list for the next visit. I’m already looking forward to coming back, whether for a casual lunch, a quick stop at the ventanita, or another meal with friends and a table full of dishes to share.
The takeaway: Come for the food, the cool vibes, bring friends, order generously, and share asmuch as you can. Just make sure the green papaya salad makes it onto your table.
